    Fitted Bed Sheets
    « on: September 13, 2022, 09:43:55 am »
    So exciting title, I know!

I've mentioned this on here before, one of the things that really annoys me is the size of the mattresses in the 2 twin rooms. They are not a conventional size and trying to find fitted sheets to go on them is an impossibility.

    Then I found this video

She makes it look very simple and I'm pretty sure I could give that a go. So have borrowed my mum's sewing machine, bought some pins, thread and elastic and am going to give it a good go.

I have only used a sewing machine about twice in a CDT lesson at school at least 30 years ago, but the way I figure, I only have to sew in a straight line. Surely it can't be that hard (famous last words  :o)

So bought some decent cheap single non-fitted sheets from Sainsbury's. Will trim them down to size, hem them, and then begin the process of adding the elastic to the corners as the video shows. Hoping it will be pretty straightforward. I have 4 to do so will be interesting to see how the first one stands up compared to the last haha  :P

Haha, well you may want to check my work first.  ;)

So this is my first go, Not too shabby. A bit rough around the edges and I have definitely learnt some things to look out for for the next 3. Also I'll just measure the mattress (2 sides and the top then add 6 cm to each total for a little underhang to tuck under, also mustn't forget to allow for extra for hemming) which will speed the process up by a fair old chunk. Getting it the right size lined up on a mattress did take a while, mostly because of my OCD and the lack of space.

So below is my first attempt.

(Creases are just because it is a new sheet, it is actually a spot on fit)

So even though it is a little rough around the edges and wouldn't win any prizes it does the job perfectly. I was actually surprised how well it fitted and came out. The next 3 will be better when I add in the lessons learnt etc.

Kind of proud of myself  :). The oversized sheets all bunching up when my 5 y/o rolled around all night was one of my little niggly hates. Not including the loan of a sewing machine it has cost me £5 for the elastic and £7 for the sheet (not counting the thread as I have 500m of it for £8 but no idea how to divy that up). Not bad for £12 and I have plenty of elastic left to do some more for spares. So I reckon £9 a sheet in total and a sense of calm due to the neatness it gives the bed. It's the small things in this world that make me smile haha  ;D

Happy to do this for others but I'll take no responsibility for fit and finish, don't even take responsibility for mine  ;)
