New to Static Caravan - Tips how to use Sky
    « on: September 15, 2020, 08:17:49 pm »
I just purchased a Static van, parked in Scotland - got all set up at weekend with Fire Stick and apps, only to discover the wifi quality (I purchased own router mifi device and not using parks) not good enough, constant bufferring.  I walked around the park and noticed lots of static with Satellite Dish - any recommendations how to get good quality picture.  I have a Sky Accoun at home.  Thanks in advance for any help or guidance.

Hello mstallard. Welcome to the forum.

I had similar issues with mifi. At one point during the summer holidays i was only getting 500kbs download speed on 4g . ???

I set the data router to 3g only and got an instant increase in speed to 11mbs and a better signal. I think most mobile devices use 4g. Nobody tends to use 3g anymore.
I now leave it set to 3g and get constant download speeds of between 8 and 14 mbs. Its enough to watch Prime in HD without any buffering or resolution issues.

Give it a go. See how it goes. I hope it works for you too. As for Sky i don't have it but i am sure someone on here will have.

    Ian

Hello Mstallard and Welcome to the forum.
You mention seeing plenty of satellite dishes around. That might just be simply the way many people get their basic TV I.e. by using Freesat rather than Freeview. With most caravans being either in coastal or out of the way rural locations Freesat tends to be a more reliable source.
As to wifi  how much did you research the network choice. Again for the same reasons as for the TV the location of the ‘van usually means a limited choice and poorer service.  It may well be one of the major networks is better than the others. Even then it may need a boost , like an external aerial to help.
I don’t have Sky at all but use my WiFi for catchup TV and Netflix etc. so it is worth sorting it out If you can.

I have to back Ian up on this one.

If you think about it, everyone's phone, out of the box, is set to 4G. Very few people change that setting. That then means the 4G bandwidth is swamped with all the mobile phones in the area. You also have to remember that 4G is much less mature than 3G and didn't really get the investment that it deserved to increase the bandwidth as everyone was talking about 5G before 4G had really got going.

I turn the 4G off on my phone and get much better connection speeds. More than enough to stream a HD movie to a reasonable sized TV. I'm going to be looking for a mifi router soon so I can see if I can work remotely at the 'van. Gerry, on this forum, posted an aerial set up that improved things as well. So will give that a try.

So def give going back to 3G a try. It should be pretty simple to do.
