    Changing wheels - questions!
    « on: April 16, 2021, 09:49:15 am »
Hi, I’d be very grateful of any help.

I’ve bought a static that will need to be resited. It’s been partially sat on the tyres, one at least is completely perished and will not allow for the van to be moved off the site.

I’ve a friend with a static who will allow me to borrow his wheels.

Can I assume that they are generally the same general type and axle size?
What size is the hub nut likely to be?

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

    Morning  Aaamusements

Different makes may mean different wheels but it all would depend how old and how similar the caravan is to the donor wheels

Best bet might just be to jack up the caravan and block it up with axle stands or similar You should have some of these already, and then just take off the wheels and get new innertubes or tires for them

Failing that  you will be able to see if your friends tires will will once you've removed yours if you don't want to get yours repaired

Either way you will need to jack it up and take one wheel off to see  8)

    Thanks.
All being well I’m going to take the wheels off his this afternoon - then I can take them over to try on mine over the weekend.
This caravan moving is hard work! And expensive...

Unfortunately not. It’s going from a rural field site to a rural self build plot - about 30 miles.
The low loader part is not too expensive but the 4x4 removal from the field adds on a big chunk...

I see so your going a bit Off road with it to get it on the low loader

Once the wheels are on it shouldn't be too much of an issue, take one off and check with the borrowed wheels if they come from roughly the same age caravan they should fit, Most wheels have a 35mm bearing so pretty much bog standard but its one of those jobs you know that you find out once the wheel is off

Good luck, Pop a picture or two on here once you've done it would be good to see how it went for you  ;)

15/16” is the socket size that fitted!
    🤨

I had to give the rims a really good bash from the back to get them off the stub axles...

I've never really thought about the wheels on the 'van before. You can't even use standard car rims I suppose due to only having one nut.

Good luck with the move. Let us know how it gets on.

Got the old wheels off (with difficulty) and the borrowed ones on.

The bearings on the wheels off my friends Willerby are the same internal diameter.
The caravan mover did say that they have some various spares that they can use if necessary.

I had to hammer off the old wheels and the inner bearings stayed stuck on the stub axle.
One subsequently tapped off with only the dust covers popping off, but the other turned to shrapnel and I ended up bashing the inner ring off with big hammer and cold chisel!

Ground underneath is very soft fenland black soil and getting something stable under the bottle jack, on my own, was a struggle. I had various lumps of wood and a thick steel plate, fortunately, but due to problematic placement I managed to bend the axle slightly!
Rest of the frame seems solid enough though.

Hope the movers are well used to this sort of thing, that’s certainly what they charge for!

Yeah they have to be old hands at this type of thing.

We mostly think about vans on sites and hard pitches but they must have to move all sorts

It was moved very well by the company, I’m very happy to recommend Mark Saunders for any caravan move.
The gateway at the old site was extremely tight with a dyke on the other side of a narrow lane, anyone less competent would not have been able to get it through without damage.
