    Wi fi in a static
    « on: July 06, 2021, 11:50:13 am »
    Hi
Although there is free Wi-Fi at our site. The signal is often not very good. Also I would prefer our own Wi-Fi so we can have a secure set up.  Does any one have any recommendations?.  Thanks

    Hi Jaymo40,

I have installed WiFi in my static.

I signed up to an unlimited deal with 3 mobile and with that they gave me a free Huawei router. It's about £20 a month. I got it a little cheaper as I have a phone contract with them. I can't seem to find the deal with the router I got on their website now but this link will give you a clue

    http://www.three.co.uk/discover/devices/huawei/4g-plus-mifi?memory=0&colour=Black

This is the router they gave me but without the external aerials

I have an external aerial as well, but actually it's not hooked up yet. Had to buy another cable and not been down there since I got it. The wifi actually works fine without the external aerial even though we are in a tin box. I stream all my TV through it. Don't get me wrong, the speed is not great, about 10mb. So I can basically do stream to the TV as long as there aren't too many devices hammering the bandwidth.

I hope to upgrade my external aerial to a duel connection as the free router I got has 2 aerial connections. (Long story but I already had bought a router off of amazon which had one connection only and now that is superfluous as I got the free one. Never mind I'll stick it on eBay)

This is the external aerial I already have

This is what I plan to change it to

There is a thread on here somewhere where a few of us have outlined what we have done wifi wise. I'll try and dig it out. I actually repurposed my TV aerial feed for this so wasn't a straight plug and play.

If you are fortunate enough to have a good mobile phone signal and a package with unlimited data, you could use your phone as a personal hotspot.  I am with Vodafone and the signal is good enough to run a laptop, iPad and streaming TV (Netflix, iPlayer etc.) with no problems most of the time.

We also have the 3 package which is fine but are tied in to a 24 month contract.
As the caravan season is only 9 months I will be paying for 12 months each year but can use the router at home for the 3 months out of season.
When the contract expires I will switch to SMARTY unlimited data sim only which piggy backs the 3 network so service is identical but there is no contract to be tied in to. They do a monthly pay as you go for about £20 per month.
Most people on my site swear by EE but this is much dearer for no extra benefit in my eyes.
