Removal of seating in a static ABI 2011 St David
    « on: November 15, 2020, 05:39:12 pm »
    Hi everybody,
We’ve just bought our first static caravan and I ’m after some advice about removing the seating from a 2011 ABI St David that we’ll be moving into Jan/Feb 2021.

    1. Is the seating fixed?
    2. If it is fixed is it easily removed without causing damage to anything?
    3. If it is fixed does anyone know the procedure I should take to remove it? (Location of screws/fastenings)

Thank you in advance for your advice
    Garry

    Hi Garry M,

    Welcome to the forum.

I have never done this before, have had a good poke around mine and done a minor repair, but I would have one word of advice. In some 'vans the seating plays and integral part in the structural rigidity of the 'van. So if it is removed there would definitely need some bracing to stop the tin can from wobbling and flexing out of shape. This is mostly in much older vans though that don't have French doors but a sofa that covers the whole bay window.

Looking at pictures of your van online I think you are ok as it the seating does not join 2 corners or span the width of the van. Very similar to my own 'van.

All the mounting screws will be under the seats in the storage bins. If there is a sofa bed you will have to remove that first. Best bet would be to remove the deck (what takes the weight when you sit down), then the kick panel (the bit where your calves are when you sit down), then the sides and finally the back panels. There is just a timber frame made of 2x2 that they screw threw into the sides, kick and top. Pretty simple and basic.

All the screws for the back panel will be straight into the wall so you will have exposed holes once the seating is removed.
Any carpet or wall paper will already be there behind the seating as it's cheaper and quicker for them to put it all up and then bolt the furnishings straight to it. Am sure you can pickup the same pattern wall paper at https://www.thecaravanwarehouse.co.uk/ to cover the holes in the wall but you'd struggle with the impressions in the carpet from the sofa. They would of been compressed like that for a long time and may not be fully recoverable.

You must take some photos and show us how you get on.

What are your plans? A bigger living room space? A nice 3 piece suite?

    Good luck.
