    Decking stain/paint
    « on: January 18, 2021, 10:24:19 pm »
The decking around my static van is very slippery especially when wet, just before lockdown I managed to use some Cuprinol decking cleaner which helped a lot but didn’t eliminate the problem, I plan to lay outdoor carpet - I prefer it to the AstroTurf type of flooring- has anyone used it? your comments would be welcome
Has anyone else managed to get the grey decking stain from Screwfix,I’ve had it on their ‘reminder’ page for quite a while but it’s never in stock,my local branch has one tin but can’t say when they’re expecting new stock,I want to use it on the handrails ,fencing and skirt around the van

    Hi Mickyboy,

    Welcome to the forum.

I like the idea of outdoor carpet. Would be simpler to clean. I wonder what the risks are of the decking underneath getting damp and getting rot with no chance to breath. I'd think you'd have to  treat it well before you put the carpet down.

As for decking stain, I can't say. I know when I got garage floor paint there was an option of some anti slip grit that could be added to stop it becoming slippery when wet. I wonder if there is something similar that could be done for decking stain.

I’ve bought the carpet, after getting different samples,it’s very thin and green in colour with a studded backing which allows for ventilation and drainage ,the samples I tried gave very good grip and looks quite effective,as you say the decking needs to be well prepared before fitting.I have spoken to other owners who have the AstroTurf on their decking most just gave me a blank look when I asked about maintenance- out of sight is out of mind!Only one had battens around the edge for easier removal for maintenance, the owner said it was a bit of a faff to remove the battens etc but he could do it in  less than an hour and check for any signs of wear and replace the AstroTurf without any damage.
As a plus the carpet was less than £4.00 a square metre, and is available without the studded backing which is a lot cheaper both types have a permeable backing for drainage and delivery was free.
When I ordered it I hadn’t realised the weight,on the company web site it says one kilo for every sq metre,my non metric brain read that as pounds( no idea why) so when it was delivered I expected it easily managed, sort of ‘ pick it up and chuck it on your shoulder’ whistling as I carefully put it in the garage in reality the delivery driver rolled it off the back of his truck and mumbled something about how many drops he had to do etc etc,I was a bit miffed at his attitude until I tried to pick it up!I kicked and rolled it to the garage where it’s laying forlornly secretly laughing at my naivety, fitting it should be interesting  😂

Be careful of putting any covering on Timber Decking as it will rot the wood much faster and you could get fungal infections with all that dampness

Look for non slip decking paint would be better

Resin Coat is a two part non Slip paint made for decking and it does not discolour
