    Trimming Internal Door Frames
    « on: July 15, 2020, 09:34:13 am »
So I am in a brand spanking new 'van, Willerby Linwood. When we moved in not a single internal door would close with out some form of rubbing. The site sales people said that the caravan would need a little time to settle. After that they came in to adjust the doors, this basically just involved tightening the screws on the hinges. Not a great practice in my eyes.

After several attempts of tightening hinges the site finally decided to get Willerby in as any other adjustments may affect the warranty. Willerby did a fantastic job on all the doors but one. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say they missed it, even though I put post-it notes on all the tight spots.

So rather drag them back one more time, it's getting tiresome now, I'm going to do it myself. I'm pretty handy.

So can anyone tell me what tools I'll need to trim back the door frame behind the finishing strip? I've seen shavings on the floor from Willerby's visits so I am presuming it's some kind of shaving going on. Will an electric sander do or will I need something in the realms of a planer? I have no idea of the make up of a caravan internal wall.

As ever any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would use a small pocket plane, only £7.50 from Wilko, looks like a small cheese grater.  It will shave small amounts. I would avoid power tools just in case they cut too aggressively. Take your time and do it gently.

Nice one thanks. I am very much an advocate for measure twice and cut once. I am very cautious when it comes to these things.

I'll make sure I have a planer on me and maybe the sander just to tidy up the edges.

You can quite clearly see the gap at the top of the door is bigger than at the bottom. Such a minor thing but so annoying.

Is the door catching sideways or at the bottom?

Any pictures ?? Are the frames made from wood or plastic ? Are the doors made from wood or plastic encapsulated ?

I would be very cautious at rubbing doors with something that looks like a cheese grater you may be able to make minor adjustments by packing the hinge with cardboard, But without looking its hard to recommend, Can you take some pics and post Mainly of the frame and door

I've been in Construction now for 30+ years and have seen most issues concerning doors

So the door is catching along the side, along the long length.

Unfortunately no pictures until I return in a weeks and a half's time. I'm not going shave the door but the actual wall. I'll remove the plastic finishing strip and then shave the wall slightly so it doesn't catch. The door itself is a pretty hollow laminate affair, so no touching that.

The reason for doing it, even though the door closes, over time with it catching there will be damage to the door just from the constant rubbing.
