    Tyre Explosion on A55
    « on: December 13, 2020, 06:05:58 pm »
On Fri 11 Dec, we went to our caravan in North Wales to winterise our van, on the way home we got on the A55  we were travelling at 65mph when we heard a tremendous explosion and our car was shaken side to side and it felt as if the car had been hit on the drivers side.
We had to travel a few miles to the nearest lay-by and as we pulled in a young man with a Mercedes pulled in front of us and he proceeded  to inspect the bodywork of his car.
I got out and did the same to our car but could see no damage, I asked the young man if he heard the explosion and he said that he saw it, it was a lorry travelling on the other side of the carriageway
and one of its tyres exploded sending rubber and debris across the dual carriageway he also said that lucky no one hurt.

    John.

    Wow, that was lucky John.

Glad everyone was ok. Must of been a shaky experience. I've never witnessed a blow out but have had one in my classic mini where a rear tyre basically unravelled itself from the tyre wall coming back from Cornwall. Had my girlfriend (now wife) as passenger and her Old English Sheepdog on the back seat. I was pretty shaken up but went into autopilot to change the tyre on the hard shoulder etc.

Truck tyres are at such high pressure I'm not surprised it sounded like an explosion sending bits of rubber and wire all over the road. My misses hit road debris that had been flicked up by another car and it did £2k worth of damage, car was only 6 days old  >:(

Was your car ok? Didn't get hit by anything?

On a lighter note, did you manage to winterise your 'van?

I’ve just caught up with this...... I’m glad everyone and everything is OK.
It always amazes me who much tyre debris there is along major roads from commercial vehicles.
